Alice Springs- "Fashion for Depeche Mode, Paris" 1971

http://www.helmut-newton.com/current_exhibitions/alicesprings/gallery.html#2

36

This is the principle of commodity fetishism, the domination of society by “intangible as well as tangible things,” which reaches its absolute fulfillment in the spectacle, where the tangible world is replaced by a selection of images which exist above it, and which simultaneously impose themselves as the tangible par excellence.

***This image, while used as an ad-most likely for clothing- makes us believe that we have  relationship with this woman. We stare at her, possibly even speak with her, but then we receive this glare from her, as though she is saying,” What are you staring at?”  On the other hand, she is dressed as though she wants attention from people, making her a walking contradiction. The quote I chose can associate the tangiable with the clothes she is wearing. Knowing that we could go and buy these clothes and possibly look like her, and get the attention she is getting. The intangiable though, is her herself. Or, us, wearing the clothes. We could then walk down the street, getting irritated by people staring at us. On the other hand, while in reality she may be intangiable, there is a photo that we can look at whenever we want, making her tangiable.

Roe Ethridge- "Apple and Cigarettes" 2004-2006

http://www.andrewkreps.com/artists_image.html?i=1357&aid=54&cid=156

**This image is similar to my first project. It reminds me of the photo of the candle holder on the dirty glass table outside. This artist seems to take many photos of things they stumble upon**

Sasha Wheeler- "Cucumber Sandwiches" 2011

**This image’s focus is on the light. It was a table set up at my friend’s Bridal Shower, and I told her mom she chose a very nicely-lit area for it!**

Sasha Wheeler- "Water Bottles" 2011

**These were grifts for Debbie, received at her Bridal Shower, with labels on them. One each for the Bride and Groom, and then a baby’s sippy cup for their daughter, Grace. I thought they were adorable**

Sasha Wheeler- "Lesbian Love" 2011

**This image is hilarious to me. It is of two of my very best friends. The woman on the right, Debbie, is getting married, and Laura is one of her Bridesmaids. They have been best friends since 8th grade. Both of them are straight, Laura being married already, and Debbie will soon be, however, in this picture they look like a cute lesbian couple 🙂 **

Photo 4 Blog- Week 8

Sasha Wheeler- "Fifth Position" 2011

**I chose this image because it is one of the few poses I can do :)**

Sasha Wheeler- "Reflection of Motion" 2011

**This image is one of my favorites because of the movement of the pose, and the reflection in the mirror.**

Sasha Wheeler- "Retire Position" 2011

**This position seems simple, but it’s actually really hard to do!**

***This quote seems to work for all of these images: “Vance demonstrated how photographs of human bodies are caught up in social struggles, and how different views about the meanings and uses of photographs have political implications.” -Chapter 4, pg 172

These photos show the strength of the human, and more specifically the female, body. Many people think of ballerinas as delicate, when they really are pure strength. Depending on where/how these photos could be shown, there could be many different views and meanings to them.

Photo 4 Blog- Week 7

Sasha Wheeler- "Pointe Shoe" 2011

**I chose this image because I love that you can see the fibers of the shoe. **

Sasha Wheeler- "Turn" 2011

**I chose this image because the body looks so graceful in this position. **

Sasha Wheeler- "Chalk Marks" 2011

**I chose this image because it has great light, and I enjoy seeing the chalk marks on the floor from her pointe shoes.**

Photo 4 Blog- Week 6

Robert Mapplethorpe- Derrick Cross, 1982

http://www.mapplethorpe.org/portfolios/male-nudes/?i=5

nez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin- "Guinevere Descending a Staircase" 2000

http://www.matthewmarks.com/artists/inez-van-lamsweerde-and-vinoodh-matadin/selected-works/#/images/9/

When I look at the Mapplethorpe image, I automatically think of the picture as an erotic image, even though it also seems to also be an image based on the form of the body. The image of Guinevere also seems to be an erotic image. She is dressed in voyeuristic clothing purposefully meant to entice the male viewer. The scopophilia one experiences while looking at these images I believe is what the artists were trying to achieve. The Mapplethorpe image does not have the subject’s face showing, making the body form the main focus. The other image has the subject staring directly at the viewer.

**I was drawn to this image not because I would wear these shoes myself, but because women often talk about shoes as works of art. These shoes literally are!**

Sasha Wheeler- "I Keep on Fallin'" 2011

**I like this image because it shows a lot of movement. And it seems that even though she fell, they’re having a blast**

Sasha Wheeler- "Help! I Need Somebody!" 2011

**I like this image because you can tell that without the help of this woman (mother?  sister?) she would probably be falling a lot.**

Sasha Wheeler- "Life in the Fast Lane" 2011

**This image draws me in because it’s such a ‘boy’ picture. They seem to be racing**

Sasha Wheeler- Marena is sneaky! 2011

**Marena thought it would be genious to sneak her huge amount of Skittles into the show by tossing them in her purse. She is silly**

Sasha Wheeler- Posing in the Bathroom, 2011

Take Me to the Water: Photographs of River Baptisms

JANUARY 21–MAY 8, 2011

http://www.icp.org/museum/exhibitions/take-me-to-the-water

**What girl doesn’t like rubies? 🙂 **

Sasha Wheeler- "Jareth" 2011

Sasha Wheeler- "Christmas Lights, Minnesota" 2010

Seeing Spots- 2010

This is a picture I took at an Ugle Sweater Party I attended over winter break. The girl on the left is pointing to the spots she was seeing after the flash from a photo before 🙂 It makes me smile.

Parking Lot- January 2011

I am a big fan of small depth of field photos, which I think is very prevelant in this photo.
