This is the principle of commodity fetishism, the domination of society by “intangible as well as tangible things,” which reaches its absolute fulfillment in the spectacle, where the tangible world is replaced by a selection of images which exist above it, and which simultaneously impose themselves as the tangible par excellence.

***This image, while used as an ad-most likely for clothing- makes us believe that we have  relationship with this woman. We stare at her, possibly even speak with her, but then we receive this glare from her, as though she is saying,” What are you staring at?”  On the other hand, she is dressed as though she wants attention from people, making her a walking contradiction. The quote I chose can associate the tangiable with the clothes she is wearing. Knowing that we could go and buy these clothes and possibly look like her, and get the attention she is getting. The intangiable though, is her herself. Or, us, wearing the clothes. We could then walk down the street, getting irritated by people staring at us. On the other hand, while in reality she may be intangiable, there is a photo that we can look at whenever we want, making her tangiable.

**This image is hilarious to me. It is of two of my very best friends. The woman on the right, Debbie, is getting married, and Laura is one of her Bridesmaids. They have been best friends since 8th grade. Both of them are straight, Laura being married already, and Debbie will soon be, however, in this picture they look like a cute lesbian couple **

These photos show the strength of the human, and more specifically the female, body. Many people think of ballerinas as delicate, when they really are pure strength. Depending on where/how these photos could be shown, there could be many different views and meanings to them.

When I look at the Mapplethorpe image, I automatically think of the picture as an erotic image, even though it also seems to also be an image based on the form of the body. The image of Guinevere also seems to be an erotic image. She is dressed in voyeuristic clothing purposefully meant to entice the male viewer. The scopophilia one experiences while looking at these images I believe is what the artists were trying to achieve. The Mapplethorpe image does not have the subject’s face showing, making the body form the main focus. The other image has the subject staring directly at the viewer.
